“What is a sober coach? What do you do?”
A Sober Coach (AKA Recovery Coach) provides additional support to newly clean and sober addicts/alcoholics often at the recommendation of their therapist, treatment center, lawyer, manager, agent, or loved ones., Many of my clients have cycled through several treatment centers and continue to relapse upon returning home. After trying everything else, they decide to hire a sober coach. Usually this entails me living with a client for up to 30 days for 24/7 support. The intimacy, companionship, and motivation of a sober coach provide a sense of safety during those first weeks home.
I tailor a plan of action according to the specific needs of the client. We establish a daily routine that includes a healthy diet, hydration, exercise, meditation, relaxation, fresh air and fun. We explore acupuncture, yoga and other activities to reduce stress. If they require a therapist, psychiatrist, or dentist, I help them to find the right fit. When authorized, I work closely with their clinical team to share information, provide observations, or implement suggestions. I believe in creating a wide net of support. We attend twelve-step meetings or alternative recovery groups, and build a social sober network. Recovery is about implementing tools to handle real-life situations, feelings and triggers as they come up.
For clients who choose to recover at home rather than go to an inpatient treatment center, a doctor must determine whether or not they require a medical detox prior to my arrival. For maximum success, these clients begin an Intensive Outpatient Program which will continue after the coaching phase is complete.
I also work with high profile and executive clients who are at risk of relapse due to long hours, high-stress stakes, travel, touring, remote locations, or actively using/drinking co-workers. A sober companion provides safety, accountability and support while on the road.,
A sober coach is not a paid sponsor. I never read twelve-step literature, work steps, or discuss God with clients. I strongly encourage clients to find and build a relationship with a sponsor.
